The Intriguing Paintings Of Peter Panov

By Christa Jarvis

The 1920s were a time when artists gathered in Paris cafes and talked about the revolution that was happening in the world of art and other spheres of life. Artist, Peter Panov, was fascinated by this epoch and it shows in his paintings. This artist was born in Izevsk and graduated from an academy in Moscow where he learned fine art.

He loves painting jazz musicians and they feature as large figures in the foreground in many paintings. Stars of the silver screen also get his attention as well as people sitting in cafes, walking in the street, reading newspapers and doing many other every day activities. We recognize his characters and they are familiar to us and yet they also tell their own story.

This artist uses elements of cubism in his work. His work seems modern and contemporary although it depicts the 1920s era and this is partly due to the way in which he uses cubism. His paintings often look almost like collages. He uses newsprint text in many paintings and this is characteristic of synthetic cubism. The planes of color and flat forms come from analytical cubism. It is interesting how these flat forms and planes manage to evoke depth.

The paintings contain many intricate details and elements are juxtaposed in interesting ways. His musicians often dominate the foreground of the painting and are posed high in the sky above the city. Others stand side by side with buildings and one cannot help thinking whether the man is molded by his surroundings or the man creates the image that surrounds him.

The textures are created with the use of palette knife and brush and colors are combined in a sophisticated manner. He takes the routine of city life and manages to capture moments in time to tell a story. Someone moves behind the curtains, a woman battles against the wind in the street with her umbrella, two lovers embrace in a telephone booth and a woman sits at a cafe applying her lipstick with a small mirror.

Josephine Baker, an icon of the 1920s appears in some of his paintings. She was an actress, dancer and singer who became famous for her daring outfits and dance routines. Mary Pickford, probably the most famous movie star of the time, is another subject he chose to portray.

The artist enjoys painting crowd scenes. In many of his crowd scenes, men face away from the viewer. They all wear suits and hats and some are shown reading newspapers. These men in the crowd all appear the same yet on closer examination they are all subtly different. The artist manages to depict our commonality and individuality in this way.

The paintings of this artist are available for purchase at online galleries. These paintings tell a story about a specific era and yet they are timeless. Those who love these paintings eagerly await any new ones becoming available as this does not happen on a regular basis. His paintings have a great deal of depth and a narrative quality that goes beyond the images.
