If you looking at works that are valued at less than five thousand dollars, you are probably not a serious collector. At these prices, it is too hard to tell whether or not an artist's work will increase significantly or what it will be worth if the owner decides to sell. For those who are willing and able to invest more, there are certain guidelines that professionals suggest will increase the chances of a good buy.

First of all, you should find out where the artist studied and who their masters were. Prestigious schools take students in all stages of creativity and expertise recognizing that not everyone is going to turn out to be a Rembrandt. The art school can be an indicator however of how seriously the artist is about the work he or she is doing and how interested the school is in having them in a teaching studio.

When you are looking at works of art by a certain individual, you should consider consistency of style. Artists who have found their artistic voices and work to improve and hone a distinctive style are preferable to those who copy old masters and work in many different mediums. The subject matter may vary, but if you can recognize the style, you will be looking at someone who is maturing in their craft.

Do not discount artists who have been recognized for their work. Some are interviewed and featured in news and magazine articles only because they are currently in vogue. Others have been singled out by dealers and their peers for prestigious awards and special exhibitions. If you find someone in the second category, you might consider following his or her progress in anticipation of buying something at some point.

Browsing reputable galleries is a good idea if you are interested in serious artwork. You should stick to the ones that have been in business for awhile rather than the ones that seem to pop up and then disappear after a couple of years. Occasionally reputable dealers open their own galleries, and you should find interesting work in these establishments as well. You may not like all the work you find there, but you should respect the talent behind everything.

When you find an artist whose work other patrons are willing to buy, you need to consider whether or not it interests you. There is probably something serious in what they are doing, and they may have pieces that will actually increase in value over time.

If you are interested in art, collecting pieces is fun and exciting. If it turns out that you have purchased a gem, so much the better.
