A Guide On Making Coiled Basket

By Margaret Nelson

When you are interested in a relaxing art, you should consider making baskets. This activity is not only fun but is also easy with very few materials needed. After you have mastered making a coiled basket, it will allow you to create any size and shape of the container. Make sure you read the guidelines below to make a good quality product.

There are a number of materials you will need. They include the crafting material of any color you want. Raffia is mostly used. You will also need universal needles and a sewing machine and scissors. If you do not have them at your disposal, you can get them cheaply at a store. Make sure you get a good quality material that will make a container that can last for long.

Start by cutting the material to the required sizes. Cut them to about one centimeter in width and any length you want. A rotary cutter or a ruler can help you in taking measurements. You have to start by making the base of the container. Set up the machine for a zigzag stitch with a length of three millimeters and a width of five and a half millimeters. Remember to engage the needles to stop down function as it is helpful since you will stop to pivot in the beginning.

Coil the material using your hand until you achieve a flat circle that measures a half an inch to one inch in diameter. A very important detail is to ensure that the code is coming out from the left side of the circle. You then should place the circle formed beneath the presser foot and commence stitching from the center. Continue stitching so that you create a base for the container.

You then need to shape the sides. When you are ready in forming the sides, you have to wedge your hand under the base circle while pressing it on the left side of the sewing machine as you continue to stitch. Ensure that the cord is under tension for the sides not to flare. If you apply tension, the sides will curve inwards. Ensure that you keep stitching vertically while working on the sides.

When you have realized the size and shape you desire, the rope ought to be cut leaving a tail that measures around two inches. For the tail, it has to be stitched front and back for half an inch before the thread is cut. Your machine should then be placed for a close zigzag. Fold the tail over the edge to complete stitching.

When you want to add a bit of color, die them in a tub by using dylon or rit dye. Prior to this process, ensure that you wet the baskets using water. You can then put it in the solution making sure that it is immersed in water completely for consistent coloring. When you want a light color, more water should be used for diluting the dye.

The most important point to remember while sewing is to go slow and be keen. This helps you to avoid mistakes that could ruin your entire work. After sewing a couple of baskets, the next ones will be easy. This is an activity that can help you make some money.
