Party Decorations

By Sabrina Himaruya

The summer months seem to be filled with parties, BBQ's and weddings, creating the perfect opportunity to make gorgeous party decorations reflecting not only the season but also the formality or casualness of the affair.

With a little effort and lot of imagination, creating the perfect party decorations needn't be a chore. Firstly, take into consideration the overall theme that you are aiming for and the formality of the occasion. Typically during the summer months party table decorations might include brightly coloured flowers and fruit. If you feel particularly creative you could make a centrepiece to give a point of interest to the table, if outside you could use a bowl of fresh fruit, arrange the different colours such as oranges, limes, lemons and different coloured apples to give a burst of colour, or if it is a more formal affair, try arranging different coloured candles on a tray, lined with natures own grass, or twigs intertwined.

There are plenty of other stunning ideas for centrepieces and if you are particularly creative you could use some of nature's gifts to create party table decorations such as grass and flowers entwined together inside a round bowl, this makes a particularly stunning display and you can choose the colour of the flower to match your colour theme. If you are feeling particularly clever you could create a centrepiece that can double up as favours for your guests using brightly coloured, individually wrapped sweets or candles. If you are good at baking try making individual cookies, decorate them to look like brightly coloured flowers such as sunflowers and place them on a multi tiered cake stand.

Table linen can be equally important in creating your perfect summer party decorations; these can be either formal or informal, depending upon the occasion. Lace and eyelets work well on any cloth in any season and for the more formal occasion you can brighten up the decorations by either creating a runner from brightly coloured cloths or layering, ensuring the colours chosen match the rest of the table decorations and place settings.

Place settings requirements will vary depending upon the type of event, for instance a formal dinner place setting will differ from an outdoor casual garden party or BBQ. Plain white crockery is very versatile and can be used for different events by adding bright and colourful napkins to match the occasion, such as fuchsia, orange, or lime.

Table favours can also help to create excellent party table decorations, using small containers or boxes that match your colour scheme and filling with small favours or sweets. A place card at each setting might also be appropriate for a more formal affair, or if it is a more casual event try using small terracotta pots with your guest's initials painted on in bright colours, or individual bud vases with a small flower.

Your party decorations needn't stop at the table. For instance you may have hired a marquee or simply be outside in the garden area, stick loads of children's whirly windmills around in between the flowers and shrubs, or hang paper lanterns from posts on strings, or buy lots of coloured buckets with candles in and dot them around the area where you will be seated, all of which will give your summer party the ambience you desire.

Let your imagination run wild and in no time at all you will have created the happy, sunny, summer's day that you were hoping for.
