Dance Films Over the Years

By Eloise J Allerton

Dancing has long been an art form that has been widely exploited by directors and film makers in order to tell stories in their movies. It is impossible to count the huge number of films that have been released with some theme based around dance but we will look at 3 particular examples here in which dance has been used. Whether it be the central theme or if it is just the style of movie, it is undoubtedly very effective for film makers.

Throughout his career, Gene Kelly became synonymous with great performances. He starred in many, many films and stage and theatre throughout the years and his role in the eternal classic Singing in the Rain is perhaps that for which he is best known. Even though the film was made in the 50s, it is still copied and referred to in modern culture especially the famous scene with the eponymous song.

Moving forward another 35 years, we come to another generation-defining movie, whose central theme was dancing to of course. We are of course talking about Dirty Dancing and in particular the role of Johnny Castle played by Patrick Swayze. Swayze was chosen for the role as, unlike in other films of the era such as Flashdance, the Director insisted on using actors that could dance. The result was one of the most successful and memorable dance movies of all time.

Some 20 years after the original release of Dirty Dancing saw the release of a British movie Street Dance 3D in which street dancing (obviously) takes a central role. The casting of current, well-known dancers such as Flawless, Diversity and George Sampson was key to the success of this film as well as the employment of 3D technology in the movie.

The success of any movie depends on many factors. Those involving dance in some way are no different. The 3 examples here span some 60 years of film and they are all different, but the movies work because of people's ability to connect with the characters. Dancing is a valid way in which to portray characters and situations in movies and there are many other films not mentioned in detail here where this is just as true - such as Billy Elliot.
