Finding The Best Irrigation Backflow Installation System

By Katy Kline

The correct backflow installation system is very important to your irrigation operation. These systems are designed to protect public water sources from becoming contaminated by toxins and chemicals. Without these devices the water resources in the agricultural areas would be susceptible to contaminants that could cause serious health hazards.

The problem of backflow is caused by what is commonly known as back pressure. Water remaining in the pipes after the system is shut off runs back into the pipes. This creates the opportunity for contaminants to enter the public water system. Most businesses are legally bound to install these devices prior to opening the doors for customers. There are several systems available and they must be inspected by certified professionals yearly as well as at the time of installation.

This is especially true if chemicals are introduced into water for pest control or fertilization of the crops. Sprinkler systems generally come with a shut-off valve but this is an inadequate answer to the problem because valves tend to leak causing the opportunity for potentially hazardous or toxic conditions. Most states have laws that demand that these devices be installed.

A double check valve assembly is the most common inline underground system found. They are popular because they are underground or in a basement or shed and are not prone to freeze in the winter months. You may not use chemicals or additives to your water when using the double check valve assembly.

The easiest whole system device to install is the pressure vacuum breaker assembly. It's also the least expensive and the most popular of all of the systems. It comes with an anti freeze function that protects the device itself. Since the lines are underground it does not need to protect the pipes attached to it. Another aspect of this device is that it frequently ejects water from its system and needs to be placed in a well drained area.

The reduced pressure zone assembly is the industrial standard for commercial properties. Apartment houses and condominiums will have this type of assembly. These assemblies are the most difficult to install and have the most complex systems to operate. They are also the most efficient means of protection from contamination.

For sheer simplicity the atmospheric vacuum breakers are the answer. They handle single lines of irrigation systems and you can use up to six of them on your property. These are also the least expensive of all of the assembly packages and can be easily installed as well. This package cannot be used for whole system operations.

Which backflow installation system to choose is a major decision when you are planning to begin irrigation of your land. What is appropriate will depend on many factors. In making up your mind you will take into consideration whether you plan to inject chemicals into your system or not, the amount of land you will be irrigating and the water pressure in the area will all have to be considered. One of the goals you will want to reach will be to protect the regional water supply by installing the best system available for your needs.
