Making The Best Portable Guitar Stands

By Cornelia White

Even though you may like the thought of your guitars safely packed away, protected from dust and accidental spills, you may also like to keep them within easy reach, so when you feel like playing you can. Guitars are also beautiful instruments that should be on display. The best way of displaying your guitars is to have them on a stand. A portable guitar stand is a good idea too, so that it can be moved wen necessary.

Stands for a number of instruments, including guitars, can be purchased from music stores, however, if you don't want to spend too much money, you can consider making your own. For homemade stands, you have several options available. Some people find that using PVC or metal pipes is most practical, while others find that cutting up some wood does the trick. The choice will depend on your expertise, and the materials you have at your disposal.

A PVC piping stand will be strong enough to display a couple of guitars, and is quite easy to put together, as usually there is no welding, nailing or gluing involved. A stand of a reasonable size will need about twenty feet of PVC, and the right thickness should be purchased. Approximately three-quarter-inch pipes are recommended.

Wood is also the ideal material from which to make a stand. There are also many designs from which to choose. If you don't need your stand to be portable, you can simply hang it on a wall. This sort of stand will also hang several guitars, and is very simple to make. All you will need is a suitable length of wood, bolts, hooks and washers, and equipment to install it.

Before you put on the hooks, make sure that your guitars can be placed with sufficient distance between them. Make a mark where the hooks will be. You will most likely find that about two feet is good enough.

When you are measuring, a level is very useful. It will be the device that ensures your hooks are at the right height, and that your wood to be placed on the wall is not skew. The wood is best bolted to the wall, and you can add washers to reinforce the bolts.

For a more movable stand, you might consider something similar to a tripod. If built in such a way, the stand can easily be folded and placed in a vehicle. Always start by drawing the parts that need to be cut from the wood, and then use the appropriate tools to cut and assemble them. You can also come up with your own unique design.

As the final step, your portable guitar stand can be decorated or painted. Before you paint, make sure the wood is well sanded. This will ensure the stand has an overall smarter appearance. You should also allow the first coat of paint to dry for at least a day (24 hours) before applying the second coat. Whether you choose eccentric colors or stain the wood, your new stand will be a very useful and attractive item.
