How To Choose Cremation Urns

By Tanisha Berg

Cremation urn plays a major role in the cremation process especially that of human beings because the cremains need to be stored afterwards. The cremains need to be carried in a vessel to the final resting or disposal place. The carrying and storage are done in cremation urns which are made specifically for that purpose. With many companies venturing into this business, one needs to have some information before setting out to make a purchase.

Choosing an urn is not a random activity rather is dependent on several factors. Some of the factors that influence the choice of urns include size, color, resting place, cost, material, design, seller, and customizations. The size of the vessel is important because not all cremains are same in size. Big animals produce more ashes compared to small ones.

170 to 350 cubic inches is the size of standard urns while 400 to 500 inches cubed is the one for the large models. There are small urns that can accommodate as little as a teaspoonful of ash while big ones can hold the remains of two grown-ups. For every pound of un-cremated flesh, a cubic inch of volume should be bought.

Color is one of the riches in urns. The wide variety of colors provides buyers with a flexibility in their color choices. The dead can be respected by picking their favorite color. Items placed in homes should be chosen depending on interior themes.

The material of the urn plays a major role too. This choice should be made early enough before one starts shopping. The materials can be biodegradable or non-biodegradable. Major materials include marble, ceramic, bronze, plastic, cardboard, cloth, wood, and glass among many others. People who like conserving the environment prefer going for biodegradable materials. The choice of material can also be made to go hand in hand with interior themes. Materials that can be engraved can hold names and other information about the deceased.

Another choice one is required to make is the design. This choice is relatively difficult to make because the market is filled with hundreds of designs yet others continue being introduced daily. Shape and all artistic works on the item are covered under the design. The vessels come in different shapes sometimes resembling items like balls, devices, or fruits. This allows the buyer to pick the shape that was favorite to the deceased. Photos and other personal stuff are placed near the vessel.

The resting place is the final place where the vessel will be placed to stay forever after the funeral and memorial services. The location can be indoor or outdoor. It now becomes obvious that materials used to build urns for indoor purposes cannot be similar to those for outdoor. Some people decide to bury them underground while other bury them in water.

The cost depends on various factors most of which are already mentioned above. However major factors that affect price are material, design, and size. Some companies are also generally more expensive than others.
