Review Of An Adventure Novel Based In England

Rosemary Sutcliff is remembered as brilliant British novelist known for her books for young adults and historical fiction. She is remembered for her adventure novel based in England known as The Eagle as early as nineteen fifties.

Ninth region of Rome disappears after they march to the Northern Britain as a response to a rising among the Caledonian tribes. Four thousand men in number were lost. The father of Marcus happens to be one of the commanders of the Legion. Marcus is a centurion in a group of second Legion. He is heading to refresh his troop accompanied by his soldiers to one of bordering forts. Before long, local native tribe attacks his camp which acts as his base.

Marcus leads the defense of his fort against the native local tribes. He is badly wounded from the war. He wakes up after several days. He was able to save his men though his leg is injured and certainly unfit to continue serving his duty. This means the end of his career and his ambitions as well. He is taken by his uncle who lives nearby after ending his career.

He lives with his uncle and his leg recovering slowly. Marcus goes to visit Saturnalia Games. He buys Enter Esca, a gladiator who loses in a fight to death battle as his personal slave. The two form a relationship more than the normal master and slave. Like Marcus father, the father of Esca too was a commander.

Rumors emerge that suggest that the Ninth eagle was with other tribes. Marcus granted his slave freedom in a promise that he would be loyal. They left together to pursue the said rumors. They came to a place known as Dun which was under the leadership of Dergian and stayed there for some time. Marcus got a chance to attend ceremony only to see the eagle of their Legion although it had no wings. He knew that the Ninth must have been killed attempting to rescue it. Marcus was able to observe that it was not well guarded. The thought came of stealing. The night of vacating, Esca stole and hid it.

The two leave without difficulties but are caught up by the tribes, midway in their journey. Marcus pretends to be confused and they allow the tribes to search him. They find no eagle and continue in search of it. Esca returns to the place he hid the eagle and recovers it. The two now have to run for their safety.

The two have to hurry up. This is because they are being pursued. They have to have to fear even those who are unaware of them. This is however difficult because the condition of the leg of Marcus, although they cannot risk stopping. They are spotted again although this time by a few of them. They run into a building to hide. At long last they are able to run for safety.

Finally, they reached. To them they had earned victory. They presented his uncle. However Eagles return failed to reform it. Marcus dreams had been shuttered again.
