Watching Classic TV Sitcoms Can Be Fun

By Ida Dorsey

American citizens are always delighted whenever they turn on their television sets to catch an episode of an old show. Currently there are two stations which air classic tv sitcoms. Atenna TV and METV seem to be going very well at this point in time. Years ago English citizens knew that they could watch the fabulous program "Are You Being Served?" whenever it was on television.

"Are You Being Served?" was introduced back in the early 70's and people really took a liking to this unusual program. Each individual around enjoyed seeing the different colors that Mrs. Slocombe would wear her hair each week. This was an odd character who never failed to make every single person within the audience laugh. Molly Sugden was able to play this key person through the entire run of the series. She and the other cast members had such grace and style.

"Keeping Up Appearances" proved to be successful with the upper and lower class families around England. Everyone loved to hate the dreadful Hyacinth Bucket. Even though Hyacinth was middle class she was a horrible person who tried to live an extravagant lifestyle. Over the weekends this lady would invite all of her neighbors to a candle light supper. Many of the residents refused to attend her social events. Mrs. Bucket had three sisters on this particular series and they did not like her behavior.

Some people enjoy watching "The Beverly Hillbillies" while others think that this is the worst show ever. Fortunately the program proved to be a big winner for CBS and it had a long run. The two major women within this series were Granny and Ellie Mae and they were both glamour gals.

Jethro was a full grown man who acted like a small boy and he even attended elementary school. Jed was the only person within this family who had good common sense and he always rescued his family. Also during the 60's there were seven friendly castaways living on an island.

Even though "Gilligan's Island" only lasted for only three years it was still a popular show. Many women watched this series to view the very intelligent man called the professor. He was a charming fellow who could solve almost any problem. Unfortunately the professor could not get the other castaways off the island. Ginger, Mary Ann, the Skipper and the Howells were also part of this group.

Ralph Kramden was a good man who enjoyed his lovely wife and their friendly neighbors. Ralph was portrayed by the charismatic actor known as Jackie Gleason. "The Honeymooners" proved to be Jackie's biggest hit series and he really liked acting with the other cast members.

"Family Affair" was a heartwarming series which dealt with a bachelor uncle and three orphaned children. These four people also had a butler living with them who was from England. The English man was very uptight and he demanded that the children behave in a certain manner.
