Can Art School Students Get Involved In Photojournalism?

By Michael Robert Peterson

When someone reports on various events, you would be safe to assume that he or she is a journalism. The idea of journalism is rooted in this very concept, as stories are written for a number of publications before being read by a number of people. Photojournalism is, more or less, the same but with more of a focus on photos than anything else. Art school students who have a penchant for photography should give this particular major some thought.

If you want to get involved in photojournalism, though, there are several points you must familiarize yourself with beforehand. To start off - and I'm sure this goes without saying - there must a strong understanding of the basics of photography. Everything from the proper angles to the correct ways to utilize equipment must come together to create the proper skill set. This is just the start, though, as far as being a photojournalist is concerned.

Photojournalists must also understand the importance of timing. When you are in a particular location, for the sake of snapping pictures, you probably already know that there is some event or another to expect. It's just a matter of timing yourself and setting up for the best shot that can be brought into whatever publication you may be working on. When you take the perfect shot, without fail, your skills as a photojournalist are made that much more apparent.

If you're going to go into photojournalism with better care, it's important to know about focus as well. Every shot that you take must be crisp and this element does not come from your camera alone, even though it has power behind it. You must also know about how lighting and distance can help to make seemingly strong shots much weaker in practice. It's in your ability to measure the aforementioned elements and work around them that will make you a better photojournalist.

It's very possible to become involved in photojournalism and, more importantly, see success in it. From what I have seen, though, this success can only come about through the highest degree of work ethic that can be imagined. Men and women alike must possess a love for photography and all of the assets it encompasses. With that said, though, they must also know how stories can be told through visuals and how, exactly, they can be captured for that very purpose.
