Tips In Pricing Commissioned Custom Oil Portraits

By Joanna Walsh

Artists can live on the commission they get from the artworks they make. Through the said artworks, they are able to get enough to live by even with just their art. They have the talent and skills necessary to meet the expectations and demands that clients have. If you have the talent, you should consider working on custom oil portraits in NYC.

The said painting is requested by clients for various reasons. It might be that they want a customized family portrait or they might want it for just an individual. They might give it as a present to someone special or as a decoration for a new home. Depending on what the clients want, you have to give it to them without any qualms.

To those who have accepted the commission, it is imperative to think of a proper price for the painting that one has accepted. You have to consider various factors when it comes to thinking of a price tag to attach to the commissioned work that one plans to give to clients. The price of a painting must be reasonable.

With regards to the price of the said commissioned work, it would be better to have some tips to take note of. These are the tips that can help you decide what reasonable price would be the most suitable for the said commissioned work. When it comes to that, here are the ground rules that one must take note of for this then.

First, you should understand that the pricing you are setting gets to change. If you are an already established painter, you should be able to command higher prices for your work. You can even raise the price the next sale. This basically means that the price you charge your clients with will not be set in stone.

Do not undercharge. When you are considering what price should be put on your artwork, you have to be certain that all of the expenses you spent money on for the creation of that artwork would be covered in that price. These expenses include the shipping, framing, paints, canvas, and similar other things.

Be as clear and consistent as you can. This is in particular to the pricing scheme you are utilizing for your artwork. Most of the artists these days avoid using the by-hour pricing scheme because that will just confuse clients. Instead of the hourly pricing scheme, the size-based pricing scheme is much better.

Do not forget to do proper research. You have to check up on other painters, especially those who are in the local area or those who are in the same stage. What you observe other painters do can be applied to your work. The information you get out of your research can also help you stand out from the rest.

When speaking to clients regarding the price, you should be firm on what you have set. You should tell them the price of the artwork they have commissioned and then shut up. Let them decide whether they will go ahead with the commission or not without you rationalizing the price. Do not apologize about your price as well.
