Decorate With Regional Abstract Artists

By Kenneth Smith

Art has gone through many periods, when certain things were in style. Abstract art is more modern than the realistic art of the Classical, Middle, Renaissance, and Romantic ages. However, it's been around long enough that homeowners have learned its value in home decorating. Modern furniture does blend with still life studies of fruit or flowers, or with landscapes complete with happy cows and fluffy clouds. However, the work of abstract artists really sets the contemporary tone.

The modern artist might create a swirl of brilliant oranges and reds, for instance, and one viewer might think of lying on hot, hot sand at noon. Another might think of the energy of the sun that makes life possible and illuminates every color of the spectrum. The artist might have had a theme in mind, but the point is always to stir the viewer.

Local artists create art in all styles, colors, shapes, and sizes. This makes decorating easy. Your hall can hold a dramatic sculpture or a silk screen that evokes city streets or coastal cliffs. The wall behind the couch or over the fireplace is a perfect spot for a large oil painting that makes a defining statement. Wall hangings can bring texture as well as color. No room is complete without something that attracts the eye; you can use different examples of creative genius.

Sometimes people find a treasure that really speaks to them, and they design a whole room around it. This can be done by picking up a color from a painting hung over the fireplace, or by choosing furniture that will display a sculpture to best advantage. The proper placement of an object and the lighting that shows it off are key.

Modern art is perfect for a contemporary home, but it can also be effective in an older house. Sometimes a photograph that looks like a study of chaos turns out to be a close up of a familiar leaf, flower, tree bark, or water scene. Your imagination, as well as your favorite things, can lead you to the perfect touch that will make a room distinctive and memorable. Many abstract works of art actually depict something of nature, or of the urban scene, and the lack of simple representation is what gives the piece its force.

Pictures are almost indispensable in furnishing a home, but you have a wide choice of pictorial art. A print of a famous painting can be effective, as can the work of a local artist you especially enjoy. Pen and ink drawings can be striking, while an oil painting usually makes a real statement. Watercolors, pastels, and photographs are other ways to decorate the walls.

Artists of the Los Angeles, CA area seem to come in every degree of talent and imagination. A piece of driftwood or a fanciful mobile created from beach glass might be the perfect finishing touch for your home. Your own taste should guide you to find something that expresses you as well as the talented person who created the object.

There are probably things out there you never thought of, like fabric art or mosaics for your bathroom. The internet is a great place to find out what is happening on the art scene and to discover things that stir your soul.
