What New Heavy Metal Music To Listen To

By Lisa West

Many people have heard of Belphegor because of how successful many of their eleven albums have been over the course of their long career. Hailing from Australia, this band has long been working on the formula for the perfect song in this genre, and they have established their style as one of the definitive sounds in new heavy metal music. "Apophis - Black Dragon" is a great song of theirs to check out because it exemplifies the intense rhythms and heroic melodies that they are known for.

When songs in this genre have a powerful message behind them that is relevant to society when the record is dropped, the impact can be huge. There is no better way to get people to understand and believe in a certain important issue because these songs make their listeners feel passionate and energetic, and showcases powerful vocals. Body Count's hit track "No Lives Matter" brings the cold, hard facts about a very important issue to the main stage through Ice-T's frustrated and on-point vocals.

When Jeremy Wagner of Broken Hope came across some guitars that once belonged to and were played by the famous Jeff Hanneman from the band Slayer, he knew he had to have them. He didn't know what would become of them, but he knew it would be something special. That was when he and the band made their album called Mutilated and Assimilated, and he recorded such hits from the album as "The Carrion Eaters" on these legendary guitars.

For a disgusting album that is absolutely horrible in the best possible way, look no further than Forever by Code Orange. The absolute insanity of the title track is enough to create chaos anywhere that it is played. The song takes many different unexpected turns, making it a conceptual journey.

For groups that have been around for a long time, it can be hard to maintain the same sound and stop it from sounding stale after a while. This is not a problem that DragonForce currently has because their album Reaching into Infinity is as rejuvenated a sound as fans can ask for. The most triumphant track on the album is probably "Ashes of the Dawn".

"Die With Integrity" by Dying Fetus is a great song to thrash out to for those who love to be in the mosh pit. It has all of the intensity that fans expect from this type of song. At the same time, it also feels like a throwback to the songs that started this genre.

There are plenty of dark bands to look into from Norway. One of the favorites of many is called Enslaved, and they have been playing songs about Vikings and rituals for a long time now. "Storm Son" is one of their absolute masterpieces, and it takes listening to it with headphones on, over a quality sound system, or live to hear everything that they put into this barbaric song.

"F--ck This Place" is an example of how singer Blothar was able to fully make his own way as the new frontman for the band GWAR. It can sometimes be impossible for an established, well-known band to replace distinct bandmembers because fans just can't imagine the band without them. Luckily, Blothar commands the material that Oderus Urungus once sang with power and flair.
