One element that is taken lightly. Is that most of what the youngest ultimately becomes is influenced by the adults and societys examples and teaching around them. How these adults all contribute to your physical, mental and emotional growth. The people your family expose you to, as a baby, also play a hugely influential role. Lastly, the structures, classes, and categories you are born into also define you. Your race, culture, community, social class, and stature. These are the elements of childhood development and health.

For a young person, relatives are many things. They provide a frame of reference, in stimulating a way to perceive and understand the world around us. A young born into a family in Africa will perceive the world differently to one born into a family in Spain, for example.

The culture you are born into determines the developmental values you acquire. Every culture is different and different values are taught and instilled. For instance Spiritual significance, some families live with the understanding of a source or God. Other families, however, don't, this is what the children learn.

Paediatric care involves the entire family in the counseling sessions the youngest receives. The family is responsible for the values our little one has acquired, therefore they are relevant to the sessions. They are also called in because of the need to ensure that the techniques applied in therapy continue at home.

Studies show that the most effective intervention in the lives of children incorporates a holistic view in considering the entire environment which supports the kids. No one exists in isolation and when each element in a persons world is considered, the growing boy or girl is given a better footing for the future.

There is information that only parents can provide, that is why sessions are arranged with them too. They can shine the light on the child's life before now. They too will get to give their account and understanding of what the baby might be going through.

Caretakers also have a background history of, for example, what traumas their next of kin has endured. They will have knowledge of life events and will be able to put the childs behavior into context. They might also be the negative influencers in the subjects behavior and the initiators of the problem. Without family-focussed therapy, the little one will continue to be affected by the negative dynamics which created the problem in the first place.
