Why Art Therapy Is Effective

By Ruth Reed

There are so many different types of therapy programs around today. Some therapists will specialize in something in particular, such a specific method or technique that can help certain people. These days, a lot of psychologists believe in a more practical way in helping their patients. An example of this is art therapy or something else that is more creative.

Of course, it is important to talk about your problems. However, this is not always possible, especially for people who have suffered from trauma or generally have problems becoming vulnerable. They may need to ease into the therapeutic process over time until they are ready to talk about this.

Something like this really makes you think without forcing any pressure on you. It can help you to stay focused and less distracted. You will begin to think that you are depressed or anxious. This is why it is recommended to fit this into the daily routine. You will be happy to know that you have started the day on a good note.

Some people choose to do this in a group setting and others prefer to do this individually. It can be useful for people of all walks of life as well as for people of all ages. Kids and teens often take part in these sessions because they too, feel that it can be difficult to get something off their chest. They may also battle trusting people. They often have to start off slowly.

Younger children, in particular will be more honest when exposed to the creative process. Therapists who have been trained in this area can often get a better idea of what the youngster is going though. They can analyse drawings and paintings by looking at the colors that they use as well as the time it takes to complete the project.

Kids who have been though abuse, for example will draw their family home without doors or windows. Family members will be displayed without emotion. This is something to take note of. There are also different ways in which the therapist will bring these emotions out. They may have a more structured program.

In a case like this, a creative therapist or an art therapist can do a lot of good for the person who is struggling. There are different activities that the individual will take part in. It can depend on what the problem is or their age and their situation. Sometimes they can use their imagination and draw something that comes to mind.

Kids are usually told what to do. It can be finger painting or it can be the painting of their family home. This is a type of a program that a child will look forward to because they usually enjoy the creative process. It is something that is natural for them. There are play therapists who will also use this method, making use of various art projects. They will work with different textures and medium. This is why a lot of kids with autism and ADHD can benefit from this as well. It can help with the sensory perception. They stay focused and they learn a skill that they begin to enjoy.
