A List Of Players Who Have Acquired Fame And Wealth From Playing Soccer

By Leonard Wilson

Soccer is such an unpredictable game full of all sorts of twists, tricks and turns. You just never know what is going to happen from one minute to another.

There are so many people that have tried to emulate the great players and go on to make a professional career in this game. Unfortunately it is not as easy as it looks to be able to do just that.

Here are a select few individuals that manage to carve out a career and become famous at the same time:

The Brazilian Maestro has to be the first person to mention. Edison Pele was just a 15 year old boy when he made his first class world cup debut for Brazil. This was a feat in itself and one in which he also managed to score two goals. He also went on to become known the king of soccer and was elected as the athlete of the Century according to the International Olympic Committee.

In a career spanning a quarter of a Century Pele managed to amass an amazing 1,000 goals. He was also reported to be one of the top 100 most influential people of the 20th Century by Time magazine.

Another player that was well noted for his craft and guile on the soccer pitch was the Argentine playmaker and scorer of great goals Diego Maradona.

His playing career lasted for about 26 years and made him a household name the world over. He was also in the news as much for his off the field antics as his on field prowess.

Bulgaria's answer to the complete soccer player was Hristo Stoichkov. From his humble beginnings playing for CSKA Sofia he soon hit the highlights with FC Barcelona with whom he won the Spanish title. His playing style certainly gave him fame and fortune but since he retired in 2003 he seems to have left the game behind.

Finally there is David Beckham from England. He got his big break in the game at just 16 years old in 1991. Soon he went to Manchester United and really started to become recognized for his great style of play. Beckham has represented England in three world cups with the pinnacle being made captain for the 2006 World cup.
