Why Have A Christmas Corporate Event?

By Cara Logan

Many of us have worked within environments that are in desperate need of some team building. With Christmas approaching, what better a way to encourage your team to become closer than with a corporate event to celebrate the past year's successes and to thank your staff for their work? After all, a corporate Christmas event offers the opportunity for your team to get to know each other outside of the office, and the better they understand each other, the more productive they will become.

Christmas corporate events are wonderful opportunity to promote team building. However, corporate events represent a significant investment, not just in terms of money, but also time. In fact, corporate events typically take up 1% of your total available working hours and staff budget.

Most companies often describe the last quarter of the year as their busiest period. With that in mind, many don't want the additional pressure of organising an extravagant event. However, this is where a recommended corporate event planning company can relieve you of any extra stress.

There are many individual elements that should be considered when organising your Christmas event, including venue sourcing, any entertainment and decoration choices and well as invitations, menu options and the music. Corporate event planners will be experienced in managing the entire process and juggling the many elements that need to be managed.

When planning your corporate event it is important to ensure that you are firstly clear about the event's objectives and tie them in with any corporate goals that have been set. This way the event can be geared towards whichever outcome you are hoping to achieve.

Whilst most objectives are likely to be psychological, such as rewarding staff or mending rifts between departments, it is important to consider how to find the most positive outcome possible. To reward positive behaviour often works well to reinforce a positive message within your workforce.

Once you have defined your goals, and decided on a general approach, the 'psychology' of a corporate event needs as much planning and coordination as the logistics of transport, accommodation, activities, break times and meals.

If one of your goals happened to be to strengthen the relationship between managers and staff, then you may want to suggest to you event planner that they mix the managers with staff in seating plans. Other ways to ensure that mixing between staff takes place are:

-Ensuring everyone is briefed and understands the need to mix and network.

- Producing a formal seating plan

- Seating people in a random order such as by their birth dates.

- Everybody switching seats and tables between courses.

There may be other ideas that are more appropriate for your group. Whatever you decide to do, the important point is that you need to plan the psychology of the event as much as the logistics.
