How To Make A BJD Doll

By Arline Bradley

One would probably be familiar with beautiful fragile dolls that he would see in houses as decorations. Now most of these dolls are what is known as a BJD doll and is basically made out of balls and joints. Now if one is a fan of these kinds of dolls, it is actually possible for him to make one of these at home and customize it the way that he wants.

Now just like any creative endeavor, the first thing to do would be to create and conceptualize. Now in this part, it is best that one would first put down all his ideas in a notebook or a paper. So the very first step here would be to draw the doll and design it already before even starting the entire process.

Once he has already made the design, then the very next step would be to buy the necessary materials for the project. Now the best thing that one could use for this type of endeavor would be Super Sculpey. Super Sculpey is a mold or clay like material that is very sturdy and can be used to make the figure.

So in order to create the skeleton of the doll, one has to start by using some hard wires so that the figure will be able to stand. Now in order to do this, one just simply has to get a bunch of hard wires and create the head, the arms, the legs, and the entire body of the figure. Take note that these wires are hard and may need the assistance of pliers in order for it to move.

Now in order to make the wires a little bit more stable so that the Sculpey will stick to it, one will have to add some masking tape on the body parts. One more thing to do with the masking tape would be to create a ball on the ends of the body parts. The last part of this step would be to wrap the skeleton parts with some tinfoil.

When the skeleton has already been made, then the next part would be the meat of the entire process. Now would be the time to get out the Super Sculpey and carve out the figure that will be created. Now to start off, one has to put a thin layer of Sculpey on top each of the segments.

After one has done this, then the next thing to do would be to build up the figure from there. In this step, one may add some Sculpey or reduce some of it in order to create the doll itself. It is also here that one will now be carving the face and adding some details on the body as well as some decorations to make it look nice.

Now after creating all the parts, the very last thing to do would be to assemble the whole thing. Now the ball that was made with the masking tape earlier is now covered with Sculpey and will be attached to a joint. Once all of these parts are connected, then the very last step would be to bake the figure in an oven and take it out once it hardens.
