Looking For The Best Fantasy Series

By Jocelyn Davidson

The fantasy genre has really come into its own in recent years, particularly with many movies being made from the books that have become box office hits. Fantasy worlds, magic, epic adventure and entertaining characters abound. To find the best fantasy series, some online research may be helpful. Reading about what others have enjoyed and looking at lists of those which are most widely read can help with selection.

Wizards, witches, dwarfs, elves, dragons, angels and chimeras all appear in these novels. Epic battles of good against evil commence with good eventually triumphing over evil. In the process, the characters go on a journey of self discovery and grow in courage and wisdom as they overcome adversities along the way.

Some series, however, have more complex characters and plots. The characters cannot simply be classified as good or evil as those who appear good may be revealed to have serious character flaws and those who appear evil start to gain some sympathy as the layers are peeled back and readers start to see why they act the way they do.

One of the most appealing aspects of a series is the fact that there is more than one book to read. Starting a good new one gives the expectation of much pleasure to follow. One does not have to say goodbye to well loved characters at the end of the first novel. Immersion into a particular new world does not have to stop and picking up each subsequent book draws one straight back into familiar territory.

Many people have speculated about why this genre has become so popular. Some say it is because these books allow us to see the deepest truths about humanity due to the fact that they are shrouded in a fictional world. They also say that they offer us a vehicle through which we can subconsciously work through our fears, particularly in our society which is progressing so fast technologically.

The fact that magical events abound in many of these novels would seem to indicate that readers are looking for something beyond the mere scientific with all its rational explanations. This is a realm where the imagination of the author can take flight. It is not bound by what is realistically possible and the boundaries are stretched as far as they can go.

Tolkien is one of the godfathers of this genre and he has provided inspiration for many other authors who have followed in his footsteps. C. S. Lewis too, provided us with some unforgettable novels about the world of Narnia. Both of these authors have had their novels made into movies. Some people see the movies first and then want to go back and read the novels. Others have delighted in the novels long before seeing the movies.

There are a wide variety of these novels found at online stores today. Finding good ones to read is not difficult due to this vast selection. It is simply a matter of reading suggestions made by fans or selecting from lists of those which are most popular. Reading online reviews is also helpful when trying to make a decision.
