There are a number of factors leading up to addictions. Sometimes, it is the result of stress or tension in one's life. It can be due to trauma from the past. They may find that they begin to lose track of what is important to them the more the addiction starts to take over their lives. It can be difficult to cope in the work environment. Alcoholics may come to work with a hangover. They may have sleep problems and battle to concentrate. They will also be stressed, thinking about the next drink that they are going to have.

It is important to look into the problem early on before it gets out of hand. Many addicts realize they have a problem, but are not ready to kick the habit. However, when this drags on they find that they are not able to perform at work and they start to lose their family and friends. Before they know it, they would have lost everything. This is why it is important to follow it up early on.

Joining up with a rehab program as a resident or as an outpatient will ensure that the patient receives all the support that is necessary. This is important to avoid temptations. One needs a program like this because it will provide the patient with certain goals, working in baby steps. There are techniques available which will help the patient to know what to do when faced with temptations.

It is important to have this type of informal support. Working in this type of a community will motivate and encourage the addict. They will start to build meaningful relationships, learning from one another.
