Review of Instant Poetry (Just Add Words!), by Larry Berger

By Sigita Kim

Poetry as therapy is reluctantly a new development in the expressive arts, however it is as old as the first chant sung around the tribal fires of the primitive people. Then it was used by some selected elders to bring healing to the sick ones. The word 'Therapy' came from the Greek 'therapia', meaning to cure through involvement in one of the expressive arts: dance, song, poetry or drama.

It isn't easy to write poetry, much less create it in front of a crowd, which is why I was delighted to discover Berger's wit, imagination, and flair for language. The verses, some as short as a few lines and some long enough for two pages, explore various subjects and themes, from fun and light to serious and transcendent.

A good example of the author's lighter poems is "Bubble Gum." The poem catches a moment, a single snapshot of pure joy. A recurring theme in this work is the idea that modern men are trapped, caged, slaves and prisoners of their own cars and apartments. One of the poems which exemplifies these ideas is "Leprosy."

In other poems, such as "Four Thousand Years Ago (The Crack Baby's Prayer)," the author takes a philosophical look at life, presenting the reader with a grim picture of society, injustice, and the violence inflicted by humans throughout history. Berger uses the symbolic metaphor of rivers red with blood-this metaphor, by the way, is also recurrent in some of his other poems.

A short story poetry competition is a competition that usually requires a person to enter a short poem that is written in a story style. Poets who write fantasy or fiction poetry are most likely the ones to be interested in a contest like this. Short story poems can be written about any thing as long as it's in the style of a story.

Christian poem contests are competitions based on Christian's faith in God. These contests most likely would require that the enter poem be about God in some kind of way. Writers who often write pure poems or go to church are usually the ones who enter this kind of poem contest. At the same time poets who do not believe in God or have faith in God may enter a Christian poem competition with a poem that explains their disbelief in God.

In present day poetry for healing, we become doctors to our sicknesses and irresolvable woes; it is a track to our own special contribution to the many recommended solutions we find in our world of lengthy prescriptions. Every tablets of drug, scripture, incantation or therapy must directly or indirectly depend on the will of a living being to be active. This thus gives us a major part to the certainty of our existence and fulfillment. The poems of our own stories, makes each and every one of us priests of our well-beings and possibilities.
