The History Of Alaska State

By Marcy Becker

Alaska is the largest state in the USA by area. The state has a unique and fascinating story, although most populace always ignores the past facts about this most popular land. What gives the history of Alaska a long lasting impression is the major series of crucial events that took place at one point and time.

Back in between 16,000 BC and 10,000 BC, the Paleolithic families migrated from Bering Land Bridge and settled in the western side of this state. At this point and time, the inhabitants of the region were a larger variety of American Indian and the Inuit tribes. Within the 18th century, the state began to see the very first European and the Russian influence.

After establishing a settlement in the state, Russia saw it worth that the territory was the best region for fur trade and within no time, it had established fur business posts. A little while later, the land went through a bad season of over hunting and this brought a decline in the fur trade. Seeing the loss that came about, Russia decided to sell the state to the United States of America bringing an end to the Russian American Company.

The Russian fur merchandisers had the ability to establish a reasonable and close rapport with the native tribes. However, this was a common phenomenon only in some few places where they settled as the native tribes usually got into hostility and ever-growing conflicts. There were many skirmishes seen between these Russians and Aleut tribes.

It is not only Russia that had an interest in scrambling and controlling the region. Spain also had an interest on the same and therefore sent its crew from Mexico for an exploration mission. The expedition crew from Mexico had several stopping points, which they gave new names during the process.

In another exploration mission, Spain sent its squad with an objective of identifying a Northwest Passage and ruing this period, they got the chance to learn about the tribe of Tlingit and its way of life. Rumors however have it that Russia never got into a sales agreement with the United States of America but rather a rental agreement where Russia would rent Alaska to USA for a period of 100 years. Another fallacy in the history is that the deal was based on bribery but the right statistics shows that Russia sold the great region to USA.

The main reason why Russia never colonized the land fully but rather sold it to the United States of America for $7,200,000 was due to low returns from its investments. This would never prevent the British and the Americans to get into contact with the region. In general, constant financial difficulties left no choice to Russia; it had to sell the land to the USA.

The history of Alaska stipulates that after the Americans took over it, it called it the Department of Alaska. In between 1884 and 1912, USA changed to Constituency of Alaska. In 1912, the state gained its full territorial status.
