My Christmas Experience Together With The Children Stricken With Cancer

By Alaric Sowerby

In the few years that I have lived, there's one particular experience that has left a long lasting lesson in my life. This was the time when I had Christmas together with the kids who acquired cancer.

A lot of individuals must agree with me that the Holidays is better experienced by children. I recall a passage in the Scriptures that says, "Then Jesus called for the children and said to the disciples, "Let the children come to me. Don't stop them. For the kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children." I think that Jesus would want us to be happy, especially the children, during His birthday.

However, only a few kids are truly blissful during Christmas day. There happen to be those who are embroiled in some war. There are also those that don't have their family with them and then there are those that are suffering. Amongst the numerous types of ailments around the world, cancer is one of the most difficult diseases for a kid to endure. It prevents children to go to school, to play, to experience a normal life and at times it prevents kids to live a life.

The moment I had the chance to enjoy Christmas together with the children who are suffering from cancer, it transformed my view regarding life as a whole. Many of us may think that a dying or very sick child will not love Christmas. However, this wasn't the image I noticed among these kids. They essentially love Christmas like they were not sick. It was like as if, Christmas time by itself was a gift to savor much more than expensive toys, personalised Christmas cards or great tasting food. This has made me consider that maybe that was exactly why Jesus liked young children. This was mainly because kids can see over and above suffering. This was simply because kids could live life in spite of how complex things are. This was mainly because children don't put off rejoicing on Jesus' birthday regardless of how difficult life gets.

Men and women get upset at a lot of things. We come to feel low whenever our expenses tend to be more than our income or when our supervisor does not appreciate the business Christmas cards layout that we made or when the traffic is very heavy. These are only too little things when compared with what a kid afflicted with cancer needs to endure everyday.

Spending Christmas together with these kids has not only shown me the greatest Christmas present that was gifted to us but likewise the way we ought to live our lives. Our everyday lives may be filled with trials but we should stay strong and live life the way it should be lived.
