Top Science Fiction Books For Kids

By Audra Olson

Letting children begin to read the genre of science fiction when they are young is a good idea. It is a genre that will further the scope of their imagination, while introducing them to new characters and ideas. Science fiction books for kids exist for different age ranges, making it very easy to begin. Let's take a glance at some of the sci-fi titles that would be suitable for young children to read.

Antoine de Saint-Exupery, a French aristocrat who wrote many works, wrote The Little Prince. This particular book happens to officially be France's best book for the twentieth century. It is also France's top translated book, and has been turned into other works suitable for the stage, screen, opera and ballet.

In this book, we learn about the travels of a prince who is a little boy from an equally little planet, which is more like an asteroid. His journey is filled with learning lessons and life metaphors that can be as useful to grown ups as they are to children. The novella's illustrations are also thanks to de Saint-Exupery.

Martha Weston is the author of a book called Space Guys! Its age group is 4 years to 8 years old. It is a book which contains rhyming text, which contributes to it being an easy read as well as fun. Its plot follows a night in the life of a young boy who is being visited by robot-like aliens who have landed in a tree outside his house.

If you need a book for a slightly older child such as a preteen, try The Rudest Alien On Earth by Jane Leslie Conley. In it, the alien Oluu comes to Earth on a mission to research it. She lands on a farm in Vermont and is able to shape-shift into any animal she chooses. In doing so, however, she often finds herself in trouble.

There are also some great sci-fi book series out there for children who cannot get enough. One such series is the Commander Toad series by Jane Yolen. This series is about a toad leader on a spaceship who guides his crew through different adventures. There are seven books available in total.

The Danny Dunn series is written by Jay Williams and runs from the fifties straight through to the seventies. The protagonist Danny Dunn is a young scientist whose adventures are unbelievable. The works reflect the mania of science-related things in the middle of the twentieth century. There are many interesting ideas presented throughout the series, including the homework machine and the concepts of invisibility and shrinking.

A few of the science fiction books for kids have been made into movies to great acclaim. Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games is one such story, of which the novel has been written for those in elementary school. In this tale, children are forced to battle for their survival like gladiators in order to facilitate the totalitarian regime in which they live.
