The History Of Southwest Paintings

By Alyce Larson

Southwest paintings are available in a vast array of styles and media. Abstract painters often use the Native American styles in history to produce modern work. Artists tend to concentrate on the landscapes and cultures that are most predominant in the area. Oils and watercolors are the most commonly used media, and art produced for tourists is produced to give a nostalgic reminder of one's visit.

Artists who are well known and whose work is particularly pricey often offer prints to clients who can't afford the originals. Limited edition prints are always more valuable and expensive, and those making investments in art need to consider the number of prints that have been produced. Investment art is at its most profitable when the art of up and coming painters is purchased before the artist reaches his full potential.

The stark vistas of Arizona and New Mexico are popular subject matter for artists. The region has some breathtaking scenery, with canyons, mountains and deserts. The cultural history of the area is also an important part of local artwork. There are artists who reside in the region, but there are also many artworks produced by visiting painters who were inspired by the landscapes.

The vistas of the region have inspired writers as well as artists. DH Lawrence is one of the many writers who spoke about the area. The cultures of the ancient world led to cave art that inspires today's artists' styles. Wildlife and culture forms an important part of locally produced work. It is also common for artists to use impressionistic styles and colors to depict the unique hues of the area.

The Ancient tribe of Puebloan has had a titanic influence on the colors and lines used in modern artworks. Their use of graphic designs and earthy colors has inspired many artists with their work. Typically, this tribe used its designs to tell stories that occurred in Arizona. More modern Native American tribes have introduced the depiction of healing ceremonies.

The colonialists had a dramatic effect on the way art changed over time. The Hispanic artists began to create woodwork and leather crafting, and the techniques are reflected in some modern artworks. Anglo American art began to gain popularity as European settlers began to take inspiration from the local vistas.

Local residents of the area started to produce silver jewelry in the late 1800s. The tribal cultures living there were influenced by the settlers' use of watercolors and oils. This altered the way they painted and depicted their culture. They began to use contemporary media more often.

When world war one ended, American settlers started to depict the cultures of natives in their work, and make use of the dramatic landscapes around them. There was a proliferation of such work during this time. This has left buyers with an enormous collection of art to choose from.

Kachina dolls and fetishes are an imperative part of the Native American religion. They make use of symbolism to depict ideals, and the appearance of such sculptures has had an impact on many of the more abstract artists painting in the area today. Petroglyphs that were left behind by the Pueblon are also an important inspiration for Southwest paintings today.
