A Swedish Female Singer Is On The Rise

By Carmella Watts

The Scandinavian region has contributed some of the finest artists known. These frozen countries produce some of the best music and culture. Many of the greatest musicians, whether male or female, known today have stepped out of the country of Sweden. More than once has the world been astounded by a Swedish female singer.

In the nineteen seventies disco music stole the entertainment scene across the world. A group called ABBA, featuring a female vocalist, was the new sensation all across the globe. ABBA became the most successful group, commercially, in the pop music genre from the mid nineteen seventies to the early nineteen eighties. Frida Lyngstad was one of the most well known singers in the world.

ABBA is only one instance of exemplary Swedish musicians. Other artists have come, gone, and left their mark on the music scene as well. During the same time period Blue Swede placed number one on the Billboard Hit 100. They a hit in both the British and American charts in the mid nineteen seventies.

An all male rock and roll group called Europe became very well known for their song "Final Countdown." Europe was a Swedish hair band who made it to the number one position in the musical charts of twenty-six countries. The all male band sold over twelve million albums and is known as the most successful rock band in the history of music.

Some of Europe's contemporaries included a songwriter and rapper named Neneh Cherry. Neneh was a vocalist, disc jockey, writer, and rapper who made some hit songs of her own. The exceptional Marie Fredrikkson was another woman to have made top charts. As part of the duo, Roxette, Marie was the vocalist accomplice to Per Gessle, a singer and guitarist.

In the following years many famous Swedish men and women sold albums in the tens of millions globally. Women like Emilia Teddybears, Leila K., Meja, and Army of Lovers made many hits of their own and gained fans worldwide. Some of these famous artists aren't even natives of Sweden. One named Laleh is a native of Iran who left her country as a young child and came to Sweden in her adolescent years.

Among the top musicians in Sweden are female songwriters, singers, and bands. Most recently a sister duo from the suburbs of Stockholm emerged with a band called First Aid Kit. They have been writing and singing folk music professionally for over six years. A unique character is Sophia Somajo, she makes Chinese techno from home and has become world famous for her self produced and recorded techno music.

Whether the women have been born to musicians, like songwriter and vocalist Lykke Li or start-ups like many of the artists and groups mentioned above, they comprise a large music scene in the Scandinavian countries. A Swedish female singer can be one of the best vocalists in the world and may recognized for her extraordinary talent as well as her beauty.
