Why People Read Contemporary Cowboy Romance Novels

By Beryl Dalton

People around the world like to see a good story unfold. In some cases, readers enjoy the tension, drama and excitement that sometimes results when two characters in a story figure out that they may be right for each other. The conflict that keeps bibliophiles guessing until the final climax has kept several writers paid and happy. Contemporary cowboy romance novels deliver all the positives of these stories.

In essence, whether or not a story of this nature contains erotic elements, it has to engage each reader with the increasing mental and emotional attraction between hero and heroine. Stories that lack any trace of such passion or have poorly written descriptions of that pull between the characters, usually do not become popular.

Nothing heats up a page like a sexy man. Prosperous authors realize this and they usually spend quite a bit of time crafting a hero who each reader will respond to well. Westerns are known for rugged stories and the men that are found in the pages of these books are expected to be built for the challenge of outdoor life. They are physically attractive and have the rugged determination to match any difficulties they face.

Most fans of the genre look forward to seeing good descriptions of the landscape as well. After all, a good story set in the West attracts readers who want the text to transport them to a different physical location. In a way, it is sort of like taking a trip through the eyes of the author. A well written book contains engaging imagery that fuels the imagination.

People who buy books in this niche also enjoy reading about how other people live. The Western lifestyle may be completely different from that which they experience daily. Instead of planting herbs, they learn of people who manage farms. Other people may vicariously experience life in another set of living conditions.

While contemporary romances take place in the West, the heroines are sometimes struggling with issues that more modern women can easily relate to. This is why some fans may read them instead of historical novellas that are based in a similar context. They find it easier to understand the struggles of a modern woman or man in that environment.

Readers expect to see romance in a Western setting. They want boots, sexy jeans and cowboy boots. However, some also look for other things to make the story interesting. In matters of the heart, quite a few readers prefer to see their characters grow as people through the love they experience and their Christian faith.

While cowboys are generally associated with Texas, several stories are set in other parts of the United States. For example, some may be written with Colorado as the base, while others take place in areas like Montana. There may also be fans who like the novels which occur in Canada and allow them to enjoy that landscape.
