Should You Supply Drinks For A Party?

By Chris Carr

The reason MixYour Drink.com came into being, was to give people an avenue to find some fantastic cocktail recipes, advice and tips on their favourite beers and spirits. We set out to give people an online portal to help them when it came to the what, when why and how of drinks. A question we were asked recently by some friends thinking of having a party, was should they supply drinks for a party or ask their guests to bring their own? We decided to take a look at that question:

MixYourDrink.com is an online portal that gives people an opportunity to find cocktail recipes, advice and tips on their favourite beers, wines and spirits.

The question of whether you should supply drinks for a party is really dependant on the particular party occasion. There are certain social occasions where drinks are supplied.

Milestone Birthdays - Generally, are catered for on some level. Perhaps wine and beer would be provided to a certain amount: For an 18th or 21 st. some Spirits and beer could be supplied. There is the option to have BYO or to have a bar tab to a limit that is affordable. A lot of these options would depend on the actual location of the intended party.

A aged milestone birthday is generally catered for again with beer and spirits. Similarly an 18th or 21st birthday may also have some alcohol supplied by a set tab at the bar.

Gathering of Friends - This is where you get to pick and choose a little bit, and intimate dinner party most people will turn up with a bottle of their favourite wine for the host.

Our suggestions:

Hosting a cocktail is another popular thing to do. Invite a few good friends and ask them to each bring a bottle of their favourite spirits and take turns mixing cocktail for the evening. If there are no recipes available, check out our recipe page for some exciting cocktails you are able to make. Otherwise there is an excellent selection of cocktail books available on the market.

Drinking responsibly is most important for everybody. If you are the host then you have a certain responsibility to ensure your guests are safe and aren't in any danger of overindulging. While they are responsible for their own actions, you as a host have a duty of care to them.

Supplying drinks for a party really is a personal choice, so never be offended when invited to a party if your are asked to bring your own. Whatever the occasion, having a few drinks with good friends can be a most enjoyable event.
