By Essie Osborn

Keep in mind, your hands need to be protected and not all materials would be suitable. The importance of work gloves are often overlooked, do not make the mistake of working without appropriate protection.

Various jobs require different materials. Choosing the right protection makes your job easy and safe. There are various types of materials that you can choose from to ensure that your work is done safely and efficiently.

For instance, leather gloves are good for strong protection. Canvas or comfortable knit gloves are best used in gardening chores. Nitrile or latex gloves, what most people consider rubber gloves, are used for messy and wet jobs. Whatever type of glove a person needs, they are built to last and are a great investment for an extra layer of protection.

Cleaning gutters is a dangerous and messy job description. When one is cleaning downspouts and gutters, tough work hand protection helps protect the hands from sharp objects and jagged twigs. The best type of material to look for when one is involved in a gutter cleaning job is split cowhide. Split cowhides are made of tough leather and are moderately insulated.

In wet conditions, it is common for split cowhide material to stiffen. They usually soften up once you start using them again; it depends on the quality. Window washing is a job that requires rubber-like protection. The latex or nitrile material is flexible and waterproof. The rubber-like material gives quality flexibility and grip-ability. There are many types of this gloves that are long-lasting or disposable; choosing accordingly to how often you do jobs that require latex or nitrile.

Polyester canvas or knit cotton is best used outdoors. They provide an extra layer of safety when handling rusty nails in the ground and are quite flexible. Grip-ability is important when dealing with outdoor work; heavy-duty canvas typically has leather palms to ensure safety. Most of these are durable and quite comfortable.

Disposable latex or nitrile material is best used when dealing with poison ivy, poison oak, nettles, or other noxious weeds. The noxious hazards typically stay on the gloves, even after washing them. It is ideal to use disposable gloves in situations such as this. If you deal with pruning trees, thorny citruses, grubbing blackberries, or clipping pyracanthas, you should invest in durable cowhide material.

Think about these steps when choosing your material. Think about why the material is necessary; protect the product from the hands, protect the hands from the product. You should identify the hazards which you will be working around; extreme temperature, electrical, viruses, abrasions, bacteria, chemicals. Determining these environments will help you pick the right material for the job.

Now that the basics of choosing the right materials have been covered, it is essential to choose the appropriate material for the job. Safety comes first, so it is critical for the safety of the worker to choose accordingly, which will vary with the task at hand.
