The Advantages Of Moving Head Lights

By Nancy Sanders

Many live music venues, clubs and bars will use disco lights to improve the atmosphere for shows and live performances. Using some standard gear such as a spotlight or beamed box light will give a basic show and very limited effects. A much more professional visual show can be obtained by using a selection of Moving head lights.

This lighting can be bought in a number of sizes and selecting the most appropriate units for your premises is extremely important. Some units can be used as standalone floor rigs but usually they will be attached to a ceiling or a metal light rack. The effects can be controlled manually, programmed to a determined routine or through sound linked to the music system that is in operation.

Moving heads are extremely flexible due to the design of them and the way they rotate and spin in your desired direction. A huge number of colors can be emitted from just one unit and by fitting different colored bulbs improved effects can be obtained. The lighting will also function in some other ways when they have been wired up to a DMX control box and various sequences have been programmed.

If you choose to use theses lights using sound activation the beams rotate in time with the beat of the music track. The volume level of the music will affect the direction and spin with the effect seeming random. By linking lights to a DMX unit a technician will be able to program sequences to achieve better effect for that track or for the entire performance.

When a lead is the focus of the lighting, operating these lights through a box allows the lighting technician to track the movements across the stage while they are working. These units can also function in a likewise way to a spot to highlight a performer and areas of interest to the crowd. Both the colors and beams may be dictated by the operator to sync the light show to activity on stage.

A trained lighting expert is not needed to get some good results from a DMX. With basic tuition on the system results can often be dramatic. Text can be produced and the names of bands can be shown on a backdrop. An amount of numbers and colors can transform a boring room into a great show. The more channels that are on the box, the more effects you will have.

To install one of these programmable, complex systems, you will need to find cabling to ensure everything communicates. The best people to do the work are qualified engineers who can ensure the wiring is safe and to code. A good quality connector and cable can be expensive but always buy ones of quality that you can afford.

Every lighting rig will need some ammount of routine maintenance. The bulbs will blow after time and will require replacing. Lenses need cleaning of dust to keep a sharp image. Inside the unit itself the motors that swivel the lights will need inspecting to ensure they continue to function properly.
