Taking Beautiful Beach Portrait Photos

By Amy Renfrey

Summer time! The beach offers so many photographic opportunities, especially for portraits. Lets have a look at some ways to get some great photos and enjoy the experience.

There is a problem with shooting on the beach; contrast. When one area of your photo seems just right the other part is too dark or too bright. This is an annoying aspect of shooting. However, it is one we can overcome with some careful planning.

What is the reason for this? This happens due to the fact the compact is exposing for the rest of the scene and forgetting about the face for example. It can't create a nice exposure for two separate areas of the scene. Facial features are difficult to get the right lighting for for, particularly if you are shooting with your camera in auto mode.

You can always face the person toward the sun. The only difficulty with facing someone into the sun is that they may squint. If the person is wearing glasses you will see your reflection in their glasses. Sure, it's comfy for them, but it does not capture a very good photo.

A handy tip to create evenness of light on your friend is to face them toward the sunlight. The only difficulty with facing someone into the sun is that they may strain to see. If the person is wearing glasses you will see your reflection in their glasses. Sure, it's comfortable for them, but it does not capture a very good photo.

The only difficulty with facing someone into the sunlight is that they may squint. If the person is dressed in glasses you will see your reflection in their glasses. Sure, it's comfortable for them, but it does not create a very good photo. Making use of a different light source is an effective method to increase light onto your person. You can utilise a reflector to bounce the light back onto their face. Gold reflectors look nice at evening or the break of day. You can simply bounce the already warm light back onto the persons face, producing a beautiful gold tone throughout the photo.

Using fill flash is also another great plan. You can simply turn the person towards the sunlight and photograph with the flash in auto. The flash unit will examine the light reflected from the scene and alter the brightness. When you take the shot the flash light will discharge. It then fills in all the shadows on the face producing evenness of light.

You can always wait for the clouds to cover the sun. This gives you lovely gentle lighting and will strengthen the colours of clothing and the environment. Or you can wait until the sun has just dipped below the horizon at the end of the day. This will create a similar effect. Beach photography is a lot of fun, particularly when you are shooting friends or family. It's crucial to watch what your light is doing; brightness/intensity, contrast, evenness/unevenness, shadows, colour/temperature and direction/angle. Examination these things will be a terrific start for your photography in the years to come.
