Tips For Choosing Male Voice Over Talents

By Lila Bryant

The voice is a potentially very powerful tool. It can be used to tell stories, convey complex information very quickly and provide the emotional context behind a message of a documentary, commercial or as narration for a movie, television show and so forth. In some cases there may be a specific reason why you want a male voice. In this instance you need to be ready to choose the right male voice over talents.

There is a wide array of projects that can use vocal talents. Commercials on film, television and radio all often use narration in order to get people listening to what the product is and what it has to offer. In the case of radio the vocal is obviously vital as this is often the only way of delivering the message of the commercial.

Before contacting independent artists or agencies you need to consider what kind of vocal tone would be appropriate to your particular project. For example if you are promoting the latest animated series you might want someone with a deep voice who can command the attention of the listener or alternatively someone hyped up who sweeps up the listener with their passion for what is about to come on.

However with the internet it has also become a lot easier to record voice overs from around the country and if necessary further afield. While this may be more expensive due to them using their own equipment it can add to the range of options available to you. When contacting the artist consider the accent they are likely to use.

There are two ways you could find a vocal talent. Some people will have their own website and offer services independently. Others will offer their services via an agency. There are advantages and disadvantages to both these options. In the case of an independent artist there is no additional commission for using an agency. However with an agency you can have a wider array of options and because they have been chosen by the agency they are more likely to be of a better quality.

The benefit of using an independent talent is that you do not have to pay the additional commission an agent will charge. However the benefit of an agent is that they will often have a wider array of talent to choose from and therefore are more likely to know someone who is most appropriate for your particular needs.

This becomes especially important if you are looking for someone away from your local area who cannot come in and record at your own studio. You need to be sure that the person who is doing the recording is technically aware and will provide recordings that are usable.

You should check as wide a range of sources as possible before choosing a vocal artist. Try a couple of agencies and some independent artists. Getting a mixture of different options will make it easier to compare what they have to offer and select something best suited to your needs.
