KJV Audio Bible

By Honorary Rabbi Jo

The King James Version (KJV) Bible is among the most distributed, most read, most purchased translation in history. It is not surprising then that it was the first ever recorded in audio format, setting yet another record for the KJV. In April, 2011, the KJV commemorated its 400th Anniversary. The Translation was in actual fact completed in the winter of 1610, but, was not circulated for the public till April of 1611. It would take the world nearly 350 years to perfect the actual audio edition!

The Original Breath of Life For The Word of Life

The KJV Audio Bible many of us enjoy these days owes a great deal of its fame to the notable theatrical voice of Alexander Scourby. He has made the Christian audio Bible what it is today. During his life he recorded over five hundred audiobooks for the blind! A lot of them are still available through the Department for the Blind, of the Library of Congress for the use of the legally blind. Apart from his various professional awards in the performing arts and stage world, Alexander labeled his recording of the books for the blind as, "...the one work that really means something to me."

He started recording the Bible in the early 1960's, when recording hardware was cumbersome and laborious. However in spite of what could be regarded 'antique' resources by twenty-first century specifications, he prevailed with this significant work. 1000s of hours went into each recording, which Mr. Scourby replicated in multiple translations, not just the King James Version. Other well-known voices also have created KJV Audio Bibles; among them are James Earl Jones, Stephen Johnston, Eric R. Martin, Max McLean, and Charlton Heston. Over and above all of these, a good many others are on the market, but gauging simply by sales results, the most famous are still the KJV Audio Bible by either Alexander Scourby, or Stephen Johnston..

The Many Formats of Scripture

KJV Audio Bibles can be purchased in a great number of platforms, from particular books for example, Scenic Wonders book of Proverbs, or the New Testament alone, all the way to the entire Bible Book-by-Book. The advent of the iPod made all the Scripture far more convenient than ever. The entire Word of God can be downloaded onto one single sim card, and played in any kind of iPod-type device. It can actually even be played in numerous car audio systems!
