Photography Session For Expectant Mothers

By May Anne Ferrell

Put the blame on Demi Moore. The trend on maternity photography began when the movie star posed nude while seven months along on her pregnancy on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine in 1991. Of course, pregnant mothers have been doing it for a long time before then, only they were fully clothed, but it was just after Demi proudly showed off her really pregnant naked figure that the fad shot up. Even two decades later, pregnant women all over the world continue to pose with their stuffed tummy, with or without clothes, for a pre-motherhood photograph.

The mothers, also the soon-to-be dads, find maternity photography a truly intimate affair since it intends to capture the momentous changes on the mother's body and her feelings while the couple look forward to the birth of their baby. It is better to take the photos during the pregnancy period because those transitions and emotions are not reproducible. It is also recommended that the mother is over six months pregnant when her belly is already big to further emphasize her pregnancy.

Even though maternity portrait traditionally means the mother's solo picture, the increasing trend nowadays is to include the dad. The idea is to catch both parents' loving emotions and thrilling expectations in the photography. If you want to include your other half in the portrait, you can decide whether you like to show a loving image or exhibit both your fun side and talk about the treatment with the photographer.

Lots of parents choose to have the photography session in the photographer's studio because they can soften the lights for a dramatic effect. But some couples would like to go back to where they held their pre-wedding shoot so the new photo can kind of help resume their story. You can also choose to hold the shoot in your home or wherever peaceful like the beach or a garden.

Now the prevalent question of the moms is what they will wear or if they should even put on anything. Nude pregnancy images may seem artistic and bold, but it is also rather common nowadays, thanks to Demi. Still, if you possess the courage and the desire to do it, by all means go. Discuss your plan first with the photographer to prepare for the session.

If you wish to keep your clothes on, it is better to wear something snug and stretchy to highlight your belly. You can dress in jeans or a flowy skirt, but for the shirt, the focus should remain on your pregnancy lump. You can also show off a bare belly in your picture to further highlight the change in your body.
