How Space Game Designs Vary

By Magdalen P. Oga

Gaming studios that have worked extensively on both space game RPG's and MMORPG's are observing lots of benefits since these games have exploded in popularity in recent years. Although technology has expanded in considerable ways since the days of dice RPG's like Dungeons and Dragons, you will still notice many of the same elements in modern role playing games. One big adjustment that you may have noticed is a move from one player console space games to Internet based games that allow many players to interact. The popularity of MMORPG's, or massively multiplayer online role playing games, is one of the most clear changes that the Internet has brought to the world of video games. What differences will players notice between classic RPG's on a gaming console and an online MMORPG?

Both RPG's and MMORPG's in the space game genre hold true to role playing essentials such as leveling up a character to progress through the game, character customization, and item looting. There is a reduced opportunity for the player to choose their own path in RPG's on consoles, however, that have very linear story progress. Game events are very strictly controlled and, though you may be able to make some minor choices about what your character does, major decisions are unchangeable.

The gameplay experience is much different if your space game is on the web and there are hundreds of other players all around you in the game world. The game environment is constantly evolving and changing based on the decision you make in the game, as well as the decisions other players who are logged on are making. These games truly feel like you are playing the role of your character because, instead of teaming up with predictable computer characters, you are working together with real people. Instead of sticking to a set path for the game's progression and your character's decisions, you can choose your own path and focus on the elements of the game that you find most interesting.

The grand majority of role playing games for normal gaming consoles have been one player games with no multiplayer support or modes. The social part of playing together with lots of other MMORPG gamers is very exciting.

While they are different in some ways, space game MMORPG's and RPG's are both popular. An exciting game that mixes role playing elements with an online social aspect can bring you countless hours of fun.
