Unique Oil Pet Paintings On Canvas

By Allan Hatchell

Many people get immense pleasure from their pets and over time, build up a very close bond with them. Humans have drawn the image of animals for hundreds of years, and today, owners take photographs of their pets in much the same way. However, oil pet paintings can be commissioned, providing a unique high quality portrait of your animal.

Evidence of a unique bond between animals and humans goes back to ancient times. Images of horses, bulls and other creatures have been found in the Caves of Lascaux, located in France. These pictures, which have been carved into the rock using stones and mineral pigments, date back to the Paleolithic period.

During the Ming Dynasty, thousands of animal images were produced. These pictures had a complex symbolic meaning, having both political and ethical messages attached to them. Luckily many of these original drawings have survived over the centuries, and some very fine examples can still be seen.

Animal oil paintings can be seen hanging on the walls of some of the oldest and most prestigious family homes. Visit any art gallery or museum and you will see further evidence of the popularity of this subject. Famous animal artists include George Stubbs, Winslow Homer and the well known German Expressionist painter, Franz Marc.

Nowadays, an artist can create an oil painting from a photograph of a pet. A detailed image of the animal will be required, as individual features need to be painted accurately. If it is not possible to decide on which photograph to use, then it's best if a selection of different shots can be provided. Remember to only send copies and not the original images, or send them electronically over the internet.

For the best results, the portrait will be painted using good quality oils, onto a stretched linen canvas. The artist will pay particular attention to the pose of the animal, the shading of the fur and the expression in their eyes. If there is a really good image showing the pet looking lovingly up at someone, then delete the person from the image, so that the expression on the animal's face can be copied.

This type of custom pet art would also make a very original gift for any animal lover. It allows the memory of a pet to stay crystal clear, even when it is no longer possible to enjoy their company. Further information concerning oil pet paintings can be found online.
