Some Lessons From The Actions Of Richard Overton

By Lee Lawrence

People get into historical records for varied reasons. Some do so because of bad deeds and others because of good acts. Richard Overton got into historical books for some reasons and it is these that you will read about in this post. A quick look at his life reveals a playwright who also doubled up as an actor. It is however his stand on certain matters that made him prominent. Many remember him not because of plays but his rebellion.

Looking at his profile, you will clearly see a person who was not afraid to speak against authority. This he did when it was the church in question or even the monarchy. As a simple man who simply taught theater, his plays were mainly about the need to have an equal society where everyone would enjoy the fruits of his or her efforts.

Among the methods he used to pass his messages included plays in theatre as well as the use of pamphlets. It is good to point out that information technology was at a very low level at the time. This means that the only way information was passed was by the use of written material on papers or word of mouth. The man used this method effectively.

For the people who are in authority, the stand taken by the man in certain matters seems to border on rebellion and many feel he should have been contained early enough. The feeling is however different among the subjects who may feel oppressed. He is therefore a hero in some quarters and a villain in others. It depends on your position in society.

Because of the way he articulated his points, the monarchy at the time felt agitated. The main problem was because of his stand on leadership and the monarchy in general. His main argument was that it was not fare to give the ruling monarch power that seems to rein supreme to everyone. This he articulated through his plays and pamphlets.

In the modern world that you live in today, many things still happen that are similar to those that took place during the 16 and 17 centuries when this man lived. You can still point out oppressive regimes across the world with their citizens crying for justice. This only points to one thing. That is the fact that human beings can be unjust if allowed.

Other important points to take from the life of the man are that it is not about how great you are in society. You can actually have an impact even if you are as little as a theater teacher. Many people look at bad things happening and stay back in the disguise that they are too little to do anything that can alter the situation.

When all the actions of Richard Overton are taken into account, you can clearly point out that you are as important as you choose to be. It does not matter what capacity you hold in society. You can inspire change from the little position you have at the moment and move further up. It makes a difference no matter how small.
