The eponymous and elusive street artist banksy is believed to have returned to his home town of bristol to mark the queens 60th jubilee celebrations with his first new piece in bristol for years, sparking further speculation and conflict.
The piece depicts an image of Queen Elizabeth's head circa 1970, adorned with a David Bowie-inspired coloured lightning bolt strike running down the front of her face. The piece seems to be trademark tongue-in-cheek Banksy, but this remains to be confirmed.
The piece is located on a section of wall opposite the Bristol Royal infirmary hospital, which has seen a number of pieces painted upon it in the past few months. Banksy originally painted a police sniper several years ago which was then painted over by Team Robbo a couple of months ago.
Banksy has had an ongoing fued with King Robbo after he painted over one of King Robbo's 25 year old pieces in London several years ago. Since then there has been no love lost between the two street artists with both taking the opportunity to paint over the others' work on numerous occasions.
Since then Team Robbo - a group of artists working with King Robbo - and Banksy have regularly painted over each other's pieces in the UK and beyond in an attempt to highlight their work and get one over on their opposition.
Banksy grew up in Bristol and began stencilling his pieces on the streets around the city and in particular around Easton where it is believed he lived as a teenager and into his twenties. Although many of his early pieces have been painted over or defaced, a number can still be found right across the city.
A number of his pieces have unfortunately been painted over and defaced, although there are still a large number visible. His most famous Bristol pieces include a grim reaper painted onto a boat, a mask-wearing Gorilla, 'The Mild, Mild West' and the man hanging naked from a window.
Banksy has long since been a significant tourist attraction, with countless people visiting Bristol in order to see and document his work. The new piece has already seen a significant number of people visit the city in the hope that is turns out to be a genuine Banksy. As to whether or not it is only time will tell.
