Analysis Of The Different Types Of Documentaries

By Cathy Mercer

The industry of filming has been transformed more and more. Rather than the usual films and movies being shown on our screens which are full of fiction and acting, there has been an emergence of documentaries. These are real life films concerning live of people, animals in the bush and the way they live, science and developments being made in the world of technology. They are quite different from the usual films people watch.

A notable aspect concerning these videos is that they have no single aspect of fiction. They are all about real life events. If it is about war, the actual fighting using all forms of guns, war planes and machinery can be viewed on the screen. Even how people die while others are butchered, all this make the components of these films.

Various types of documentaries are available as of today. Poetic documentary is one of them. The airing of this was done early in the nineties. With a basic foundation on grammar aspect, it contains fluent flow of rhythmic sounds. It can be established that the use of people appearing within the casts is merely as a show of material belongings of the world.

Expository documentary is another type in existence. In this one, there is communication being done on the basis of authority that is directed towards the viewers. This concerns some given points of view. Another feature about this type is the use of rhetorical questions aimed at this audience in order to persuade them. On this note, there is accompaniment of deep, male resounding voice within the commentaries.

On the aspect of mere watching, there is observational documentary. This one entails watching keenly certain aspects in life and later on coming up with the story in complete. Whatever is being observed carries on with its daily life with no intrusion whatsoever. With this guideline in place, it creates a revelation that is similarly to that of human character as per the normal life.

Imitation can be essential in this industry since it leads to production of participatory documentary. The imitation under this guide is associated with that of an anthropologist. There is appearance of the filmmakers on regular basis at certain points within the story line both in image and commentary. As their appearance keeps coming through varied positions, so does the subject line of the entire film. It creates twists and turns.

As for the reflexive documentary, it tends to draw attention to its own construction and those particular elements it is representing. It has high sense of skeptic and bears a lot of self consciousness with regards to the other types thus drawing attention to its own.

The concluding type as far as documentaries are concerned is the per-formative documentary. This one entails emotions with regards to response of what the rest of the world perceives. Here, viewers are given a chance wherever they are viewing from to put themselves in certain positions and experience how it feels like being in that particular spot.
