The Artist Declares Faith Through Christian Modern Art

By Eric Jimenez

Your emotions may be strong when viewing a picture of the face of Christ. An artist uses his talent to express faith and devotion to God. It is pleasant to look at Christian Modern Art because it is beautiful, inspiring and many people are encouraged to pray when they see it.

Renderings of the Savior are a popular topic for the leading Christian artists. Thomas Kinkade is one who paints with deep feeling. Collectors buy his work more often than that of any other Christian artist.

Jesus is depicted with deep intense emotion showing in his eyes. He is painted hanging on the cross, both realistically and symbolically. Many other paintings show the cross using all colors and styles. One shows a blue cross made of small squares and rectangles on a red background. The background is also small squares and rectangles.

Large and small gold crosses are outlined in blue or red. He is shown in a variety of poses. In one series he is shown as a black distorted figure. His body language alone tells of his sorrow against a stark black backdrop.

Some look like cheerful greeting cards in sunny colors. A bible verse is written on them. Some are dark and sinister. It all depends on the feelings evoked by the bible verse. Most Christians will find a favorite verse among all that are available.

Angels are always a favored figure in Christian paintings and on Christmas trees. They are beautiful and glowing, in pristine white robes with halos on their heads. Others are shown helping people to carry heavy burdens throughout difficult journeys. They sometimes are shown as caricatures from childrens stories.

Sometimes startling outbursts of color jump out at the eye from the abstracts. Lovely stylized flowers may bloom with blossoms growing towards heaven. Dark, monochrome pictures show Jesus on the cross. Each one is a personal rendition of the painters grief over the crucifixion.

Each abstract can take on different meaning to each who sees it. Colorful circles and other patterns may mean the circle of life to some. Others perceive all the circular patterns as symbols of eternity or heaven.

To the Christian, they have more meaning than the abstracts of secular artists, Jackson Pollock is one example. Mark Lawrence is the Christian artist famous for his technique called painting with light. It is a truly modern medium using a digital process to render a painting in a special way.
