How to Play Dominoes The Puerto Rican Way

By Joey Woods

Dominoe is a very famous game not only in Puerto Rico, however in all Spanish ethnic traditions and in the Caribbean Islands. It's a true pastime and it is really loved and played by families of all ages.

In this page you will learn how to play domino the way I was taught to play it by my parents. The way Puerto Ricans play the game. I will have other post on how to play dominoes with different rules and ways to play domino.

You are going to need a dominos set. The common set is the double 6 dominoes set with 28 dominos. To play the game you'll need a minimum of two gamers and a maximum of four game players. Now we shall focus on a 4 player game. When there are 4 players, you play as partners. The gamer to the front of you is your partner. The game players on your left and right of you are your competitor.

All dominoe are shuffled face down. Each individual player draws 7 (seven) dominoes. Each gamer holds their own dominos secret to their self. You should keep your dominoes secret. Never let other people see your dominoe, as well as your companion.

In the first game of a match, the game player who holds the double six starts the game. That's only carried out on the first hand. The winning player of the first hand and each winner after can kick off the hand with any domino they want. This may be a double or another domino.

Once the first domino is played, the next player to the opener's RIGHT plays. The next player can either draw or pass if they don't have a matching domino. The game continues counter-clockwise.

The domino layout always has 2 open ends. When playing a dominoes, you must place it on one of the long end of the dominoes. The dominoe is never play in the middle of the dominos, only the long end. All domino played have to be played to a free end and must match numbers. i.e. a 3 must be played to a 3, a 5 to a 5, and so on.

If a player does not possess a matching number to play, they must take a pass to the next gamer. The game finishes when the last dominos is played, or when the game is locked (the game can no longer proceed).

Whenever the game ends, you gather all unplayed dominos. All remaining points are awarded to the winning team. If ever the game is locked, Both teams add their points. the team with the lowest of points wins the hand and adds the points from all players for final score. You're free to play a 150, 250, or 500 point game. First team to accumilate the agreed points wins.
