Lap Steel Guitar Method By Hal Leonard

By Vic Lewis

I have bought quite a few lap steel guitar books by now and can say that this one is the best. The others just simply aren't concise enough. You can learn several tunings from the book and the only criticism I would have is that there aren't enough songs in any one key, but that can be remedied by buying a book of songs in the keys you settle on. I wish I had seen this book when I first started to learn steel.

The pacing and detail of the guide is perfect for a slow fingered novice like myself. It's perfect for nervous beginners who get confused with difficult instructions. If you've been put off by the numerous YouTube videos promising to assist beginners when the opposite is actually the case, this book is the way to build a solid foundation of style and technique. You don't have to shy away because of difficulty with this instructional book.

Even though it's easy to learn using the Hal Leonard Lap Steel Guitar Method, it does take a while to get through it. Too bad the CD that comes with it doesn't have any verbal instruction to explain the useful licks; for example when to use them and for what type of song.

The useful licks are very good but what context I would use them in isn't explained very well but none the less they are good for your chop building. It's a great book for a beginner but a few things like practices, speed exercises, proper use of the slide and chord formation would make it even better.

And for under ten dollars, it's a great lap steel guitar book. It gives multiple tunings (which can be hard to find online), some sample licks in the different tunings and a few basic songs to learn. The CD is great insofar as it gives the reader a goal sound. If you know the basics of a steel guitar, or can play one or two songs already, then this is probably not the book for you. If, however, you play other instruments, and are just looking for the basic introduction to steel guitar, this is a perfect place to start.
