Great tips for brides - wedding photos.

By David Knight

When thinking about wedding photography, I have discovered through many years of experience, a number of tips that will help you enjoy your day and at the same time, get the best out of your wedding photography experience.

1. Prioritise

Before your special day, think about what are the most important elements of the day to you. These wedding photos will become important family records and it is vital that your photographer prioritises the images that YOU want photographed. If this is not thought about, your photographer will capture what they see as the main events.

2. Photographic Style

Discuss with your photographer the kind of photography that you like. Many brides ask for a casual photo-journalistic form of photography as they are not keen on posed shots. In truth, a skillful wedding photographer will be able to capture set-up shots that do not look overly posed and wooden. These can then be blended with the candid photography to produce an attractive cross section of photographs which represent both the detail and emotion of the day.

3. Family Group Photographs

When it comes to your family group photographs, ensure you have provided your photographer with a list of the family shots that you would like captured. It is also critical that those family members who are on the list know they are required for these photographs.

I strongly recommend that the family photographs are taken at the the ceremony location where everyone is already gathered. If you leave the family pictures to later in the day, it can be difficult to gather family members quickly which can end up in lost time and stress for all those present.

4. Hair & Make-up

On your wedding day , be sure that your hair and make-up are finished an hour and a half before the ceremony. This way you can relax and capture at you leisure those important photos before leaving your home. Leaving everything to the very end will have impact on what often is a special photographic opportunity.

5. Wedding Emergency Kit

Always pack an emergency kit for the day. This should include still water for the bridal party, a needle and thread kit, scissors, plasters and a rescue remedy - some chocolate or packed sandwiches!

6. Don't be too Late

It is critical to arrive relaxed, and on time at the ceremony location. A few photos taken just before you enter the marriage location are always looked for by brides and these will take between 5/10 minutes to photograph.

7. Personal Photographs

It is really important to give the photographer 15/20 minutes to capture the bride and groom's special shots away from the guests. This is often done as your family and friends are called for dinner as you usually have between 20-30 minutes to wait while they're seated.

8. Relax and Enjoy

Your marriage photographs will look much better if you're relaxed and having a good time.

The key is to make some basic plans for your photography and allow for a small amount of photography time. Your photographer will wish to produce superb photographs for you to value for the remainder of your life - but remember, he/she is a photographer, not a magician and they will need a short period of time and some co-operation.
