Upside To Acquiring Dental Implants

By Chris J Phillips

When a dentist places an artificial tooth to substitute a natural one, it is said that you have received a dental implant. This is a practice that has been embraced by many people over the years due to the benefits that have been associated with it. It is quickly replacing the other means that have been in use in the past. Dental implants are the ultimate replacement for a tooth or several missing teeth. This may have been lost by either accidents, periodontal diseases or any other means.

When apt conditions followed by consistent maintenance are provided, they can last for as long as a person is alive. When going for them, ensure that you approach an experienced dentist with all the proper credentials and expertise for the job.

When you visit the dentist with the intention of having one tooth replaced, the dentist will insert something resembling a stump. This will then be covered by a temporary crown to allow healing. After several visits that may last between two and six months. The dentist will be able to determine how well you have responded to the treatment. The temporary crown will then be removed and replaced with a permanent one.

When you have several teeth to replace, the dentist will carry out a number of alternative restoration procedures. This time you will be given an implant supported bridge. Once this is in place and you are healed, you will be able to use your jaw and teeth as if they were natural. Nobody will be able to tell that you have artificial teeth just by looking.

Some of the options to be considered for replacement include; a snap on denture. Two implants will be made for this procedure. The two are used to hold the bridge containing the teeth.

The dentist may also decide to give you a removable bridge. Here, six implants are drilled into the jaws. There is a bar that connects them. On this bar, the teeth will be fitted. This kind of treatment helps to keep your face from collapsing. It also reduces cases of bone atrophy.

Before settling for any type of dental implants, the dentist will deal with each case as a special one and make his decision based on this. One of the things that will determine the procedure to be used is the missing number of teeth.
