Effects Of Calligraphy Designs In Writing

By Katrina Wheeler

Calligraphy designs, originally refers to lettering that is done in single strokes, using a calligraphic writing instrument, such as a modem, brush or pen-traditional. Calligraphic lettering refers to typographic art that is formed by drawing the letter forms in outline. However, lettering and calligraphy may be used to mean the same thing, especially where lettering is done in calligraphic style, and is flowing.

Several other western styles use similar tools and practices, but differ by stylistic preferences and character set. Modern designing techniques range from functional arts to fine-art products which may or may not be legible. A skilled and experienced calligrapher can always practice both non-classical hand lettering and classical calligraphic art, although the two differ greatly.

Calligraphic art is mainly used in event and wedding invitations, religious art, original-hand lettered logos, memorial documents, topography and fonts, announcements, graphics, announcements, and cut stone inscriptions. In addition, it is used to move images in film and television and images, birth and death certificates, maps, testimonials, and all forms of work that employ use of artistic writing. Charters issued by monarchs and state officers in various countries apply this art as well.

Pens and brushes are the most important tools for calligraphers. Dip pens and fountain pens are the most used types of pens. Dip pens that are dipped into the ink remain the original way of writing calligraphic arts and are the most preferred by many calligraphers because they have a broad range of nibs. Fountain pens are less messy; therefore, many beginners find them easier to work with.

The paper used for printing should have good consistency of porosity so as to produce cleaner lines. Vellum or parchment is normally used for printing purposes. A light box is also necessary in order for lines to pass through the paper whereas a knife is required for erasing the work. Light boxes and templates are also required in producing straight horizontal or vertical lines without any detraction on the work that may arise from pencil markings.

Western calligraphic designs use Latin scripts. Since the discovery of the Latin alphabet in the second century, it has made tremendous developments including Roman imperial capitals that were made of stone carvings. A new uncial script was later discovered that was used for copying several religious texts, including the Holy Bible.

Spacing and margins, and color are very important considerations that every calligrapher needs to consider before producing the final product. Spacing of words and letters, and adequate margins are important to the balance of a layout. Generous margins add visual interest and make the text appear well balanced. It is therefore important for the designer to use his judgment well in determining the suitable margins. Color adds variety to a design by highlighting parts of a text or contributing to the mood one wishes to convey.

Calligraphy designs give form to signs in a harmonious, skillful and an expensive manner. It ensures the thoughts are as important as the way they are presented. The beautiful impression created by these arts motivates many individuals to learn and develop the necessary skills that eventually help them develop their own styles.
