The Procedure Of Glass Carving Alberta

By Angela Briggs

Carving of glass is a technique that is artistic and is used for inscribing symbols and creative designs in glasses. Sand-carving as a technique was developed back in the 19th century and was used for creating multilevel abrasive etchings on surfaces. When the design has been etched, light and shadow details are added. In looking to do glass carving Alberta residents have some helpful tips to consider. The carving is used to create gemstones, sculptures and windows among others.

When carving glasses, there are 3 main things that are required; etching cream that is acid based, foam brush and stencil. To begin with, the glass piece is placed on a surface that is flat then it gets sprayed with an appropriate cleaner. In order that the etching cream may properly adhere to the surface it is being carved on, the surface has to be very clean and dry.

After being cleaned, the surface is wiped with soft cloth so that it dries up before one continues. One has to choose the design that should be carved. Most experts in art and craft recommend stencil since it has an already existing design. There are stencils that come with adhesive backing to make them adhere completely to the piece. The back is pulled off the stencil as it is held down firmly for some seconds.

For the sake of safety, people are advised to put on both goggles and latex gloves. This is because fumes that are coming from the cream may be very strong and thus have adverse health effects. The goggles are particularly useful for people that have eye sensitivity. Gloves are helpful for all people, and especially those that are allergic to latex.

There should be application of latex towards the edges of the stencil, especially so at the places where they meet glass. This is used for protecting sections that are intended to get carved. If such sections were to be left uncovered and they come into contact with the cream, chances are that the design will be ruined. After the cream is placed on the foam brush, the brush is used to even out the application. Watching the corners and edges ensures that all sections are covered by the cream.

The cream is removed from the glass for every 10 to 20 minutes that have elapsed for each direction that came with it. Any excess cream is wiped with paper towels and the hands properly washed before gloves are taken off. Doing so ensures no traces are left.

There are very many people that appreciate the beauty of carved glass. Such carvings will always be seen in shops that sell gifts, in glasses and also in fancy windows. The fact that there are not so many people that deal with the carvings means that as a business it can be very profitable.

In considering the business of glass carving Alberta business people would need three main things. These are resists, blast cabinet and a well lit studio. It is a business that is profitable if the right marketing is done. Marketing is done by creating brochures, making a website and even setting booths at local events.
