Dress Well For Less Money: Elegant Clothing On A Budget

By Serena Price

Knowing how to dress is a skill that will always serve you well, whether in a business setting or in a social setting. However, even when you know how to dress yourself and have the desire to dress well, it can be difficult if you are short of money. Elegant clothing can definitely be expensive, but there are ways you can save money and still dress the way you want to. Here are some tips.

1. Check out the discount stores. Many designer labels have outlet stores where they sell overstock or irregular items. Also, there are stores that buy all kinds of designer things and sell them at a lower price. It can take time to sort through the racks, and they may not always have the size you are looking for. However. With patience and time you can often find fantastic deals.

2. Second hand and thrift shops. Like the discount stores, these stores will have a lot of things that you wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. However, if you have the patience to look, they will also have rare gems that will make you ecstatic. Devote a whole day to thrift shopping. Take a friend and make an activity of it. Just don't get carried away spending lots of cash on items you won't really wear. A good rule of thumb: Buy something only if you really love it.

3. Switch things up. You can often create a whole new outfit out of things that you already own. For instance, a scarf or a belt can bring a whole new vibe to a dress you have grown tired of wearing. Spend time mixing and matching.

4. Buy versatile items. When you do spend money on something, make sure it is a flexible item. You want things that you can mix and match. Spending a lot of money on a scarf that only goes with one outfit is unwise. Instead, buy a scarf that you will feel comfortable wearing with several different things. Neutral colors work very well for this purpose.

5. Buy a nice coat. In the winter (and even in late fall and early spring), people see you in your coat more often than they see what you're wearing underneath. This is why it's important to have a coat that is stylish as well as functional. That way you can make a good impression any time you're walking around outside, even if you're wearing pajamas underneath!

6. Buy nice footwear. No matter how nice your outfit is, it can be ruined by bad shoes. On the other hand, nice, stylish shoes can take a boring outfit up a couple of notches. If you walk a lot, invest in some shoes that are both comfortable and stylish, so you can look good and still get around. Like coats, shoes are worth spending a little extra cash on because you wear them so often.

You do not have to choose between looking good and saving money. Even though elegant clothing sometimes cost a lot, there are plenty of ways to be a savvy shopper and buy them for less. It takes effort and creativity, but it is definitely worthwhile. You will look and feel good, and that feeling will be increased by the knowledge that you still have some money in the bank.
