Silk Painting Supplies Can Be Found In Any Art Store

By Marissa Velazquez

Silk painting is becoming very popular lately, mainly thanks to the Serti technique. This simple and easy technique gives amazing results, and the whole process is easy to learn, and applying dye to the silk is interesting and simple. Silk is available just about anywhere. All you need to do is to find yourself some appropriate silk painting supplies.

If you are a beginner, maybe the best solution for you is to buy a special painting starter kit. It contains all those things you will need to get started painting on this amazing fabric. You will find different special paints there, pushpins, sumi brushes and foam brushes, as well as very detailed instructions to help you get started.

Starter sets of basic colors are also very nice things to buy, especially if it is hard for you to decide which colors you should buy. Lovely sets of small bottles include all popular colors, and are very easy to use, because all these bottles have their applicators. Even if you know which colors you need, it is good to have some basic colors in your home, just in case you might need them.

So, you'll find very attractive colors in these starter sets, for example magenta, turquoise, golden yellow, scarlet and all other popular nuances. If you are interested in Chinese design primarily, you'll need other nuances of red, black and gold as well. You don't need all those colors at once, of course.

The main characteristic of Serti technique is the fact all colored areas are sharply bordered and defined, using resist or gutta lines. Clear water based resist should be removed once the design is completed, but some types are design to stay on, and can be colored. In any case, once the dye is set, you can remove the resist, or not, whatever you choose.

The textile has to be washed and dried first. When it is still dump, you have to iron it. Before starting, you need to prepare the frame. Canvas bars are available in any art store, and you need them to keep the textile stretched and suspended from the surface. If you are skillful enough, you may try to design the frame yourself, but you'll surely find one in your nearest art supply shop.

Draw your design on a piece of paper first. If needed, emphasize all the lines using a black marker. Lay a piece of a white silk on top of your design, and you will be able to recreate it on the fabric using vanishing marker or a pencil. You can also draw your design directly on the material, if you are creative enough.

Now it is time to fill the applicator with resist. Attach a special tip on the top, and you are ready to start applying resist on the fabric. Once the resist is dry, you can apply the dye. After that, simply remove the gutta, or leave it on. Your lovely design is done, but you have to fix the color to make it permanent. The method of fixing depends on the type of silk painting supplies used.
