What To Look For When Hiring A Graphic Designer

By Michael Minton

You may have noticed that graphic designers are very easy to find on the internet. As a matter of fact, if you do a google search, you will find over 27.3 million web pages that mention the subject.

Many schools have arisen to teach a person how to do graphic design. Some schools advertise that the person does not need any artistic ability, just a desire to work in the field. What is taught is how to create using graphic software. Other schools give a Bachelor of Science degree for graphic design graduates.

It may seem like finding a needle in a haystack to locate a graphic illustrator who can produce what you want in a professional way. I've come up with a few tips to help you sort through the "hay" to find that "needle".

* Before you can convey to anyone else what you want, you need some kind of idea or even a sketch of the type of image that you want. You should also thoroughly communicate your ideas to the designer. Being able to envision for yourself what it is that you want to get across will make it finding a graphic designer an easier task because you can look at their past designs to see if the style is what you are looking for.

* There is a time to cut corners and a time to spend what you need to get a professional product. This will be what your future customers see first and you want to make a good impression. So don't skimp on this part of your new business.

* On the other hand, this doesn't mean you need to pay the highest price either. A designer with a lot of clout may not click with you or just have a certain style that isn't what you're looking for.

* Should you go with the newly graduated hot shot or a person that has experience? You may find the newly graduated designer that has created something very cool but s/he may not have the experience to make sure it prints correctly or that it's properly optimized for the web, etc. A person with experience in the field would know the different formats to use, the correct paper for the printed project, the correct optimization for online graphics and would also know the best places to go to in order to get quality printing at good rates.

* Recommendations are a great way to find out if the designer can deliver the product on time and within budget and how he/she is to work with. If testimonials aren't readily available, ask the designer for a list of clients that he/she has worked with in the past that you could talk to.

This should make your task of finding a qualified designer that fits with your style a little easier.
